First off: it's already paid for. We've already paid the full amount for the venue rental, and while we'd like to get at least some of that money back, if we don't, we're not going to starve or anything. 😉
The space will cost $750 to rent for 5 hours (4 hours of panels plus a half-hour break plus half an hour of setup time). We're aiming for about 25 attendees, which at $25 each will cover $625 worth of the rental. That's close enough for us to call it a success.
Other cons also sell Artist's Alley and Dealer's Room tables, often at relatively steep prices: $100 and up. We want to keep our logistics simple by avoiding that, but that means we're not getting any of that money to offset the badge price.
Larger cons can afford relatively smaller badge prices because they get sponsors who offset the cost of running the convention. Sadly, we don't have any sponsors.
